Fuji Bank, Others To Create Finance, Nonfinance Net Portals

TOKYO (Dow Jones)--Fuji Bank Ltd. (8317) will team up with Softbank Corp. (9984), several financial institutions and others to offer a wide range of Internet-based services in and outside of the financial sector, the bank said Monday.

Fuji, the Industrial Bank of Japan Ltd. (8302), Dai-Ichi Kangyo Bank Ltd. (8311), and other financial institutions will set up a joint venture in July to operate two Internet portal sites, one for financial services and the other for general businesses, starting in December, Fuji said.

Fuji will also create an Internet-based branch "em-town branch" (Electronic Mizuho) within its network, where it will offer better interest rates and services, reflecting a cost advantage in running the "virtual" outlet, the bank said.

Nineteen financial firms, in addition to Fuji, IBJ and DKB will participate in the financial portal, Fuji said. A majority of them are expected to obtain equity stakes in the joint venture.
