That is not correct. This may help to explain it better.

The "shareholder of record" gets the dividend...period. I've gotten dividends from stocks I have already sold many times and that is really the strategy that caused Richard to start this thread. The ex-dividend date is two business days before the record date meaning its too late to buy for dividend capture since it takes three business days to settle and that is why the price is adjusted for the dividend at the open on the ex-dividend date.
