************************************ Toronto stocks just barely inched up in lackluster trading today, as U.S. markets were closed for the Memorial Day holiday. The only hint of excitement came from news of a favorable gas well test in California by Berkley Petroleum Corp. (TSE: BKP), which helped boost the junior exploration sector. Calgary-based Berkley said that it's encouraged by those preliminary results, which lead it to believe that the well is capable of rates of 30 million cubic feet per day, plus condensate (a valuable, high-grade oil). Berkley's share price rose C$2.25 to C$13.95, with almost 1.4 million shares changing hands. That compares to a 52-week high of C$17.75 and a 52-week low of C$7.80. Berkley's public company partners in the project also gained ground. Elk Point Resources (TSE: ELK) rose 60 cents to C$5.55; Hilton Petroleum Ltd. (CNDX: HTP) gained C$1.45 to C$4.05; Kookaburra Resources Ltd. (TSE: KOB) was up 65 cents to C$2; Paramount Resources Corp. (TSE: POU) rose C$1.40 to C$19.50; Richland Petroleum Corp. (TSE: RLP) gained 40 cents to C$4.50; Trimark Oil & Gas Ltd. (CDNX: TMK) jumped up 71 cents to C$1.40, and Westminister Resources Ltd. (TSE: WML) added C$1.70 to C$5. "The Berkley release sparked a run in the junior resource stocks, which livened things up a bit," said John Ing, president of Toronto-based Maison Placements Canada.
