Who, or what, is a "short," American Spirit?

Speaking for myself, I never shorted anything until this last market downturn/correction/crash/whatever you want to call it. I just got tired of helplessly watching the value of my long portfolio dwindle. Doing a couple of successful shorts got me at least some of my money back. As Auric points out in the header of this thread, shorting is a way of hedging your longs.

And I'll bet you dollars to doughnuts that most of the people you call "shorts" have in fact more longs than shorts in their portfolios. So how can they "get out"? Get out of what? Out of trying to make the distinction between good companies and bad ones?

You can learn a lot by shorting, btw. I certainly have, and I am only a novice at this sort of thing.

I guess a month and a half later you have a chance of finally being right.
