There's plenty of investors who don't know what a truly nasty market is like. They're simply too young or weren't investing. A slow, grind you to death bear market would be their biggest nightmare, because a lot of folks figure they can make money in a down market as long as the market moves sharply.

There's a 'black hole' school of thought that thinks deflations aren't easily reversed. They might be like a force of nature, and they will simply run their course no matter what anyone does to try to derail them.
