Aware Introduces New DSL Diagnostics Technology; Aware Demonstrates Dr. DSL Diagnostic Software Designed to Address Rapidly Growing Demand for Advanced Diagnostic Tools BEDFORD, Mass.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--May 30, 2000--Aware, Inc. (NASDAQ:AWRE), a worldwide leader in DSL (digital subscriber line) technology for high-speed Internet access, today announced that it will be demonstrating Dr. DSL(TM), its new suite of digital DSL diagnostics products, at SUPERCOMM 2000. Dr. DSL is software that may be incorporated into central office equipment and customer premise modems that offers service providers a new approach to DSL diagnostics that will enable them to more quickly and cost-effectively pre-qualify, provision, and support DSL services. Dr. DSL includes firmware embedded within the ADSL chipset that collects useful data about a customer's DSL modem, link, in-home environment, and interference sources. Dr. DSL also interprets the collected data into plain-English results that are useful to technicians of varying skill levels. The resulting information, which includes actual data rates, loop length, bridged taps, crosstalk and in-home disturbers, can then be transferred to a service provider's network management system. Dr. DSL can reduce technician "truck rolls" to the home because its visibility into the physical DSL link yields very accurate data, and its two-ended presence enables remote interaction with the customer modem. Dr. DSL can be incorporated into traditional central office (CO) test equipment, or other CO equipment such as DSLAMs (digital subscriber line access multiplexers) and DSL-enabled switches. Dr. DSL can also be downloaded into customer premise modems to further improve accuracy and add new functionality such as customer-assisted DSL installation and troubleshooting. "Dr. DSL is able to offer unmatched accuracy and unique functionality because it uses ADSL algorithms to diagnose the condition of the link," said Peter LeBlanc, vice president of marketing at Aware. "It is designed to be used as a standalone product, or part of the existing network testing infrastructure to offer a comprehensive, end-to-end DSL testing solution." He continued: "Dr. DSL is a logical product extension derived from our deep understanding of ADSL technology, and Aware's latest example of leadership in the DSL industry earned though our commitment to innovation." "Difficulties with provisioning and maintenance of DSL services have been legendary inhibitors to the mass deployment of ADSL," said Kathie Hackler, principal analyst for Dataquest/Gartner Group. "New diagnostic tools that help service providers deploy DSL services in a more timely and efficient manner by reducing technician truck rolls are required for the DSL market to attain its potential." For a demonstration of Dr. DSL and other Aware products, visit Aware at SUPERCOMM 2000 in Booth # 1449 at the Georgia World Congress Center in Atlanta, Georgia from June 4-8.
