admittedly the risk/reward profile seems pretty good here...i don't really believe it will go bankrupt. i have a small position myself btw.
some of the big loss during the last quarter can be ascribed to extraordinary environment reclamation expenses, and similar to other mining cos. HL continues to write off reserve assets, which contributes to losses, but has no effect in terms of cash. the industry will however have plenty of tax-loss carry forwards once the situation improves. the biggest concern is HL's debt, but on every other metric, like price/book, price/sales, the stock is extraordinarily cheap. essentially priced for liquidation.
