David,
I recently positioned some AIF pref. Symbol is AIF_PT on Yahoo and AIF.pr.t on E*Trade and AIF-T on Datek.
The stock is 9% preferred and callable in 2002 at $24. Its trading at 12 now for a 18% return. The stock probably won't be called if rates are above 9% until 2032 I think.
AIF is Acceptance Insurance Company and they write crop insurance and long distance trucker policies and other specialized business. The stock is down because of a class action lawsuit by rice farmers. The suit was recently settled paying the farmers 3c a pound. The dividend doesn't appear to be in any trouble and AIF has cash reserves sufficient to meet their needs. If its called in 2002 its a 100% gain on the stock and 18% while you wait.
I am finding it difficult tracking down the preferred stock symbols, any ideas?
