LightPath Technologies, Inc. Announces Collimator Supply Contract With Corning Incorporated

May 30, 2000 08:19 AM Eastern Time
ALBUQUERQUE, N.M., May 30 /PRNewswire/ -- LightPath Technologies, Inc. LPTHA , announced today that it has been awarded a supply contract with Corning Incorporated GLW to be the primary supplier of a customized collimator built specifically for Corning's PurePath(TM) Wavelength Selective Switch (WSS). The initial order for the large beam collimator assembly for the WSS is approximately $1.0 million and is scheduled for delivery over a six-month period from July 2000 thru December 2000.
The collimator being supplied was specially designed as a key component in Corning's line of PurePath optical switches. By combining its patented laser-fusion technology along with its GRADIUM(R) Glass lens technology, LightPath was able to meet Corning's requirement for a collimator that produces a large diffraction-limited beam. The GRADIUM Glass collimating lens creates a beam diameter several times larger than conventional collimators, while still maintaining extremely high beam quality. LightPath was also able to achieve outstanding thermal and environmental stability by utilizing its laser-fusion technology as a means to suppress unwanted reflections. This technique provides an elegant, axially symmetric design that holds its pointing accuracy over wide temperature excursions.

Brad Scott, Senior Product Manager at Corning APT in Garden Grove, California commented, "We have been very pleased with LightPath's efforts on this project. One of the critical design elements was athermalizing the switch itself. LightPath responded to our challenge by developing a design that was thermally stable both in its pointing and collimating properties. The collimator they delivered to us was, to the best of my knowledge, superior to anything on the market today. When we announced the PurePath switches prior to NFOEC last year, we were overwhelmed with the positive response we received from the market. At the most recent OFC in Baltimore, we won the show's top new product award for the wavelength-selective version of the PurePath switch. Based on our own forecasts for the roll-out of this product, we knew it was important to get LightPath qualified as a vendor and get this production contract in place."

Stephen Barna, LightPath Vice President of Marketing and Sales commented, "We are excited about what has been accomplished with Corning on the development of the these large beam collimators. LightPath's technical resources working in a cooperative relationship with Corning developed a wining design that not only meets a very demanding set of specifications, but also allows us to easily transfer this design into mass production using our automated fusion technology. In today's environment, the ability to quickly ramp up to production volumes is nearly as important as the success of the design itself. Our goal is to capitalize on the positive aspects of this working relationship, and use them as a model as we explore opportunities with other customers who require high volume, custom solutions utilizing our flexible manufacturing capabilities."

LightPath manufactures its proprietary collimator assemblies and GRADIUM(R) glass products at its headquarters in Albuquerque. The Company's subsidiary, Horizon Photonics, manufacturers isolator products utilizing its proprietary automation technology in Walnut, California. LightPath has recently announced the opening of a second office in Warren, NJ for the purpose of development of various optical switch products. The Company has 22 U.S. patents, plus 4 more pending, associated with its optical technologies. In addition, various foreign countries have issued a total of 8 patents with 9 patents pending. LightPath common stock trades on the Nasdaq SmallCap Market under the stock symbol LPTHA.
