Charles - they HAVE lowered the price of NT workstation a bunch, especially the volume sales to corporate customers. The other issue puts them between a rock and a hard place - if there was a way to achieve backward compatibility with the NT architecture it would have happened 5 years ago. But too many of the Win9X products expect to take direct control of resources that no responsible OS would give to an app. Eventually, Win2K may be attractive enough that most key apps will be reworked to use the indirect model. But by that time maybe no one will even care what OS is under the covers...
