RE:"I disagree. AMD and Dell do talk all of the time, but whether Dell is serious about AMD or merely playing Intel for better prices is a large point of contention.

I guess it amounts to who pays for lunch. <G>

RE:"For AMD to tell A Salomon Smith Barney analyst that Dell asked for a chip deal and was turned down is very big news. Analysts aren't dumb, they know the difference between talk and and "offer." "

Some here might differ with you about whether analysts are dumb or maybe sly like a fox if we give them the benefit of the doubt. <G>
AMD may well have turned Dell down in some way shape or manner in the past but it's too late for the K6-2 and Dell.
Like I suggested before, Dell loves to introduce a new leading edge product. Duron (or T-bird) would be such an opportunity should Dell want to take the leap...
Or like you said, Dell could just be tormenting Intel for better prices or speeds...
Someone did mention that should AMD make a leap in MHZ...Dell would be under a lot of pressure to offer AMD chips...
