Chic, I'm not the one to ask regarding splits. They're bullish, but really mean nothing to me. Although ... to be able to say I own THOUSANDS of shares of AMD might be pretty cool.

I don't think you can say anything under $200 would be a disappointment - based on your timing. The reality - we all know that if AMD continues to execute and garner more respect, we're looking at a $450 stock - but not for another couple of years, IMO. There are a lot of in-roads AMD has yet to exploit. OTOH, even at $450 AMD still has a market cap of only $65 billion, and after a 4-for-1 split could still be bringing in $3-$4/share!

I hope I'm wrong & you're right.

Dave

Re: Doesn't this make a 4 for 1 possible? Or two 2 for 1's?

chic,

I think two 2 for ones is the most likely scenario. Heres what I base my thinking on. As we all know Jerry takes everything personally. It's all a contest to him. He has finally beaten Intel in something, in this case EPS. Now that AMD's EPS are more then Intel's Jerry will not want to let Intel get ahead in the EPS race by splitting more then 2 for 1 at this time.
AMD will split again when they are making enough money to stay ahead of Intel in the EPS race. That would be about $13.00 per share with today's float. Not out of the question according to some on this thread.

Just my 2 cents.

Someone mentioned a 4 for 1 was not possible, why? 172,000,000 x 4 = 688,000,000 shares, which still leaves 62,000,000 shares for later use. Doesn't this make a 4 for 1 possible?

No. According to the 10-K,

sec.gov

"Shares Reserved for Issuance. The Company had a total of approximately 40,245,000 shares of common stock reserved as of December 26, 1999 for issuance related to our Convertible Subordinated Notes, the employee stock option plans, the ESPP and the restricted stock awards."

That's in addition to the 152,006,873 shares it says were outstanding on February 28.

According to the 10-Q,

sec.gov

there were 153,192,460 shares outstanding on April 14.

Finally, according to the Proxy Statement,

sec.gov

the business at the original shareholders meeting on April 27 included,

"Approve an increase in the number of shares authorized to be issued under the Advanced Micro Devices, Inc. 1996 Stock Incentive Plan by 7,250,000 shares,..."

Now 153 million + 40 million + 7 million = 200 million shares...no 4 for 1 split.

And don't neglect to review this:
