I wish I had a nickel for every time Corel announced a "strategic alliance". If they're going to hype the stock with empty words, why not use fresh language?

With an eye to the future, Corel is strategically moving towards the solutions consumers are demanding.

Who wants to invest in futuristic eyes? What does it mean to be "strategically moving towards" something and what company can't make that claim? Their press releases appear to be written for grade school student investors -- 5th graders. They seem to be stuck on the word "solution". If analysts were following this stock (I guess there is one strong sell out there, that's it) they would issue STRONG SELL ratings upon reading those empty statements.

According to International Data Corporation, Linux Server Operating Environments have seen a 93.2 per cent growth from 1998 to 1999.

According to Corel's financials, to the exent they can be relied upon, Corel's foray into Linux (watered down Debian Linux with a couple of extra utilities) has been a virtual disaster. Sales dropped by almost 30% last quarter for that "product" alone. Then they talk about retail sales of Linux and conveniently leave out the part about retail sales being virtually zero in comparison to the internet appliance and server markets. Sounds like Cowpland writes these pump pieces himself.

Corel will leverage its acknowledged expertise on the desktop...

Acknowledged by whom? By Corel's CEO, that's who.

Corel has established itself as an innovative force in the Linux market with our desktop version of Corel LINUX OS.

Does "innovate" mean make stripped down copies of Debian Linux, stuff the retail channel with everything you have then have sales fall by 30% the next quarter? Then I guess we have to give then the nod on being "innovative".

Enough bull from these guys. They are spamming the press with pump pieces between dismal financial reports. That's when they get the most mileage out of them since nobody is going to be able to confirm their lack of execution until next quarter's numbers are released. What we know for certain is that they never execute and will come up with a new angle after this one fails to ignite. Not that Linux will fail, far from it, but the dozens of leaders in that market space will continue to lead, leaving Corel and its hollow press releases in the dust.
