Chief benches two figures mentioned in police probe

NEW HAVEN, Conn., May 30 - Two top New Haven cops were put on leave after their names came up in an ongoing murder investigation. Police Chief Melvin Wearing put Detective Capt. Brian Sullivan and Sgt. Edward Kendall on paid administrative leave and says it appears the two withheld information on the case.

The allegations stem from the 1996 unsolved murder of Philip Cusick. Who killed the 23-year-old Cusick? That?s the question detectives have been asking since December of 1996. Police believe Cusick was shot in New Haven and was driven to North Haven and dumped there. Because the body was found in North Haven, it?s been a North Haven police investigation. There have always been rumors that some New Haven police officers failed to cooperate with North Haven investigating detectives. Now, the rumors have turned into allegations and a grand jury wants to know if Captain Sullivan and Sgt. Kendall withheld information regarding Cusick?s murder.

Chief Wearing released the following statement on Tuesday. ?Information provided by both men during an internal investigation calls into question the integrity of and credibility of how the case was handled and suggests that there was information which should have been turned over to North Haven police.?

Police aren?t saying what the withheld information is. Both the New Haven Police Chief and North Haven Police Chief declined NBC 30?s requests for an interview, citing the ongoing investigation by the Grand Jury they declined NBC 30?s requests to be interviewed. New Haven Mayor John DeStefano says he has full confidence in the police department and he is satisfied with the direction of the internal investigation.
