W. Piecyk at Paine Webber reiterated his buy recommendation today. In his report, he discusses China and addresses the latest FUD quite clearly. He states that "the radio spectrum license owned by Unicom's parent company...can only be used for a CDMA network."

Lucent Modular Cell Supports CDMA2000(TM) High-Speed Data, Multimedia Services

SCARBOROUGH, ON, May 30 /CNW-PRN/ - To prepare its network for new services such as high-speed wireless Internet access and multimedia communications, Clearnet Communications Inc. (TSE: NET.A; NASDAQ: CLNT) today announced the installation of new Lucent Technologies (NYSE: LU) wireless equipment adhering to the new third generation (3G) CDMA2000 international standard.

Clearnet will use Lucent's new wireless base station as its main vehicle for expanding voice services to existing clients and to enhance upcoming wireless Internet services with data transmission rates faster than those available from the typical home Internet dial-up service.

"In coming months, Clearnet clients will be offered a suite of services that will allow them to easily customize interactive Internet information services, including personalized news, sports, banking and other financial information, and send and receive Internet information and e-mail directly to and from their phones," said George Cope, Clearnet's President and Chief Executive Officer. "With higher data rates, exciting new features such as online travel information and reservations, real-time airline flight status reports, online shopping and e-commerce will be made possible."

Clearnet PCS 3G Infrastructure

It is anticipated that the new Lucent base station, called the Flexent(TM) CDMA Modular Cell, will support Clearnet's infrastructure needs well into the future. The Modular Cell offers the ability to double voice capacity compared with today's base stations, and provides increased mobile data transmission rates of up to 144 kbps for 3G1x or 1xRTT, as specified for 3G wireless networks under the IMT-2000 blueprint of the International Telecommunication Union. Incorporating newly adopted enhancements of the Code Division Multiple Access (CDMA) wireless standard, it is expected that the Modular Cell will assist Clearnet in preserving and extending the impact which it has already had on Canada's telecommunications landscape.

"We made a strategic decision to adopt CDMA as a technology platform, and with this base station we will gain the benefits inherent in the standard - graceful evolution to 3G services from the same platform and with incremental advances within the same spectrum," said Eros Spadotto, Clearnet's Executive Vice President and Chief Technology Officer. "This base station product will allow us to respond to changing market needs and to unleash the power of the Internet with high-speed data services over convenient digital wireless connections."

"Clearnet PCS has always been at the leading edge of innovative mobile communications services" said Carol Stephenson, President of Lucent Canada. "We are delighted to be working with them on this joint effort to bring the benefits of the mobile Internet to their digital wireless clients."
