More to Position Location - Question for Techies It intrigues me that Qualcomm spent $1 billion on Snaptrack, one of their largest investments in the last one year or maybe ever. I would think it is more than just providing location-based information to cell phone users. Some hypotheses: 1. Qualcomm could sell solutions into the GSM-market because Snaptrack's GPS assisted position-location technology is not dependent on CDMA. 2. The knowledge of position-location of the mobile can be used to improve the soft handoff algorithms. I have seen some Lucent patents in this regard. Now if the algorithms can be improved by improved position location then Qualcomm has cornered key patents in improving CDMA further. Here is an abstract of an Ericsson patent on a similar topic: United States Patent 6,058,308 Kallin, et. al. May 2, 2000 -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Apparatus, and associated method, for adaptively selecting a paging area in which to page a mobile terminal Abstract Apparatus, and an associated method, for adaptively selecting a paging area throughout which to page a mobile terminal. A record is maintained, indicative of the position where a mobile terminal was located when last-accessing the network infrastructure of a communication system in which the mobile terminal is operable. When a page is to be broadcast to the mobile terminal, the record is accessed, and the paging area throughout which the page is broadcast is adaptively selected responsive thereto. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Inventors: Kallin; Harald (Sollentuna, SE); Ghisler; Walter (Upplands Vasby, SE).
