Re: A man of letters may have stirred the campesinos out of their inertia.

GEEZ! Charles.... Where did you learn that "men-of-letters" were the safest bet to stir people out of their inertia??

Of course, I concur that "culture" is always a privilege but it's not a panacea to avoid political disasters. Remember, 60 years ago, Europe was full of "men-of-culture" --like Chamberlain, Churchill, the Duke of Westminster, Goebbels, Dr. Mengele, Pope Pius XII, Pierre-Antoine Cousteau (elder brother of the famous Cdt Cousteau), etc. --and you know the fiasco they were all dragged into, don't you??

While we're at it.... re: You're the right man to ask - where is Abimael Guzman today? Is he in prison?

And where's George H. Bush's pal, spick(-and-span) Carlos Salinas?? Is he still on the loose in Ireland? Do you think he's got still enough money to give George W.'s campaign a little boost? Or has he definitely refrained from helping his GOP partners (with drug money, that is)??
