The cost is quite minimal. Consider how much Jerry Springer takes to mount a show, this show is quite reasonable. And look how long it has been running. Plus it still has reasonable ratings. (In Cuba of course it occupies a great part of the entertainment.)

I've had a further thought on the expenses here. Maybe the Government should privatize these kinds of actions and get money from sponsors. For instance Taco Bell or Smith & Wesson might have been interested in picking up the tab for the seizure if all the INS people wore their Logos on their attack gear. Imagine the wonderful publicity that the picture in the closet could have generated if there was a Pepsi emblem on the INS guy's helmet.

In fact it could be such good business that they might have staged the rescue operation live at prime time so they could have promo'ed it. It sure would knock Geraldo out of the box.

I love it! Millions upon millions to try and send a kid back to Cuba. I wonder what the cost was for building the raft
that brought him (part way) to the U.S.

They would be saving money by giving Elian a cheque for $1 mil and sending him to a civilized country of his choice.

Elian could probably get a nice flat and an Oxford education for that $1 mil, what the hell make it $2 million.
