The paragraph is basically correct.If you have new modulation schemes such as EDGE the old phones will of course not work in that mode.But even when implementing EDGE
it should be possible to use the mobiles in the old mode.I don't like when they talk about going from GPRS to EDGE.EDGE is just a new modulation scheme which gives higher dataspeeds but GPRS will be used on EDGE and as will on UMTS.

This nodes are not proprietary.The protocols linking the SGSN:s and GGSN:s to the IP network and the radionetwork is standardized in GSM.
