Techplayer,

Nortel has been investing heavily in optical research, technology and product development for over 5 years now. Market leadership with 65% or more market share and growing doesn't happen by itself. You can be sure that Nortel will be protecting and guarding its patents now that old technology companies like Cisco and Lucent and other Johnny come lately's are trying to play catch up with their check books. The future is optical/photonic systems and the future is now. Nortel owns that sector.

Techplayer, you mentioned that Nortel does not have a box to compete with Cerent, Cyris, Chromatis etc. I think you are correct about that. Does Nortel have to compete in that space. Can't they just let Cisco, Lucent and the startups battle it out in the metro access market? Wouldn't Nortel continue to dominate in metro core and long haul?

Actually, TP, Nortel has been in optics for longer than 5 years, more like 10 years. They have more experience than just about anyone in this area.
