i found his assertion that the Japanese and the US bubble can't be compared 'for reasons too numerous to list here' especially amusing. i posted a comparison table of Japanese and US economic data during the bubble years to him...you may remember, the similarities are in fact eerie. the main differences are far less numerous than the similarities: 1. Japan had a current account surplus, the US have a deficit. 2. positive/negative savings rate. 3.the Tokyo real estate bubble was bigger than the one in Silicon valley. 4. the US stock market bubble is much bigger than the Japanese one was as a percentage of GDP, price/sales, price/book and price/earnings and the market internals are worse.

as a more general comment, what will come to be seen as absurd are today's prices if anything...
