"We didn't cross the borders. The borders crossed us."

.. from your url - indigenouspeople.org

They mention the difference between the US treatment of the canadian and mexican borders ... well yes they appear different, but just try taking a landed inmigrant to Canada through that border ... the US doesn't recognise the canadian residency papers [which confer all rights and responsibility of citizenship save voting], they just look at the mexicano passport in which they are stapled ... so even to change planes in San Francisco or LAX, they put you in a special little jail they have in the airport ... 'TWOV' they call it, 'transit without visa' ... you pay hundreds of pesos for the privilege, and yes, there are armed guards [some really sweet negro ladies as well, though, who do their best to make you comfortable].

Japan Airlines flies direct, Van to el DF ... they charge more, and broke promises to us twice now, but guess who we deal with ... btw, the very nice japanese lady in the JAL office on Reforma in el DF is a third-generation mexicana ... no, fourth? [her grandfather was born in el DF in the 1920s] ... she speaks perfect japanese, spanish, english, german, and french ... and a few more, i forget which.
