Yes, it's permanent documentation, conferring permanent status ... well, lifetime status ... there is no requirement to carry the process further and become a canadian citizen, though of course most do [for that you must wait three years, then start the process which takes around one year] ... once a citizen, you can then get a canadian passport, which means you can pass through the US without a visa, but still, if you look mexicano, they check you out thoroughly ... anybody with anything like a native american look to them needs to allot considerable time for border-crossing ... and to double it if they have any hint of spanish accent. We would love to drive from here to Chiapas this coming winter, so we could take a truckload of presents for family, and have wheels while we're there ... but US visa procedures for mexicanos are extremely difficult, and the return trip would mean four US border crossings - simply not worth it ... in a little over two years more, my wife will have a canadian passport, then we'll drive ... meantime we just fly right over. As of about three years ago M‚xico relaxed their prohibition on dual citizenship [Canada did that fourty years ago, the US retains theirs] ... so a person can hold both ... and you soon learn which one to show at which border, lol. The second worst border crossing i've ever had was in dealing with a slimey little power-tripping INS potentate at Blaine, i was just trying to get to SeaTac to catch a plane to LAX, then change for el DF [alone, and i have a canadian passport] ... he just didn't like the look of me, was determined to find something wrong ... in the end all he had to justify his actions was the charge that i had given him 'attitude' ... lol ... which is not true, i'm quite good at the pokerface thing. But that was only the second worst - the worst ever was on a reentry to Canada from New Zealand [well, at that point from Rarotonga] ... for absolutely no reason, again ... their computer must have mixed me up with some serial murderer or perhaps even a Baptist.
