Don't know what the difference is between symmetrically-beveled and chiseled. Do you mean beveled on one side vs. two (two vs. one, in this case)?

That's a good point. Because most of these spurs here appear never to have been re-tied. I checked the spikes on the porch, there are nine, and these are all even-wedged at the tip, as opposed to bevel-chisel. About a third are bent, in different places. I have to doubt, looking at the density of those spikes, their size and length, and just guessing from years of driving objects into wood, that you could bend one of those babies driving it. Wood, just isn't that tough. Maybe a knot. A hard knot. But a piece of metal that size and short will wedge it's way straight into a piece of wood. The ties aren't hardwood, either, as I recall. How, or if, this fits in with tie/track replacement as Ish described, I don't know. I think driving one with a sledge would be interesting. But that's probably for a real man. I would be pressed to hit it. It's not very easy. We should see if we can find a Railroad Man.
