After squandering the profits of DLT by not spinning it off before the magnitude of the overcapacity in the DD industry became more visible in 1997, it now looks like Quantum is looking at the prospects of being in the same position as Exabyte in 1994/1995 when Mammoth kept on slipping behind. As you recall, that one year delay allowed Quantum to parlay the DLT business that it bought from DEC into one of the fastest selling tape drives in history. What makes it more foreboding is that IBM, HWP and Seagate, which have over 60% of the compact tape market, have skillfully grabbed mindshare of their substantial corporate customer base even if their own production plans keep on slipping. LTO remains my main reservation about Exabyte, Z. I would have thought that at $100 million or thereabouts, a vendor strong in automation/library technology would have picked it up already. But then again, the tape business is not getting much play these days. Storage Technology is still in limbo. Ampex Data Systems has been trying to sell its $50M (sales) high-end tape business for some time now. A couple of the niche players went out of business too, if I remember correctly. By the way, whatever happened to Terastor? Mid-2000 launch and a bunch of lawsuits were the last things I heard. Also, TBD???
