RE: Dreman

Dreman was an excellent investor for many years. But since he sold majority interest in his business to Kemper, his performance has suffered mightily. My guess is that he really isn't working as hard as he used to; he took one glove off, to use an oil field analogy. I don't listen to him as closely as I used to.

DELL at 50x or so isn't a layup buy, but the short side doesn't look that enticing either right here.

>>>He also goes on to talk about how Dell is "primarily a box manufacturer with a growth rate that will decline as the personal computer industry decelerates," and how it spends
virtually nothing on R&D.>>>
HDL, those who keep making that statement can really get my dander up. Its like saying Walmart is going to fail because they never invent anything- just sell stuff.
Or that Mc Donalds is merely a burger maker and will fail because people might turn to other foods.
Those who watched Dell from the beginning can see that Dell ( Michael) is consistently applying the same business principles which made for success from the first
weeks of production.
Michael is spending more on R+D than in the past. But
the truer and most valuable R+D that Dell does is not to invent some new gadget- Dell's R+D is in finding the gadgets invented by others, integrating them in a new system, and making them all work together.
Many companies can produce a notebook, but it takes lot of experiments (R+D) to make one like Dell does that can be dropped on a hard floor from a height of 5 feet and survive the trip or take top honors on comparison tests.

Why is this crummmy market up?. I have sold most everything but Dell. They told me the markets were going nowhere-just volatility for months. The NAS is up 5700 points. I coulda been rich. Why are they doing this?. It always happens to me.(sob). Sell and it goes up, buy and it goes down.

The other big "if" is when the rate of pc sales slows down. I don't believe that will happen anytime soon in a macro sense. Does Dreman know that dell makes servers? When does he think server sales will slow down?

hdl, re Dreman

Dreman is a value investor; he avoids growth stocks - looks only for old line value companies in which to invest. His performance has been in line with most value funds. Dreman has made as many blunders and positive surprises.

Asking Dreman to suggest a PC company for investing is akin to asking my wife which hunting gun to buy. she hates guns.
