In the first place, they were not his friends, but his tormentors.

In the second place, he had certainly heard of Jethro Tull,but I guess the tormentors thought of it as the exception that proves the rule.

Finally, of course, I never heard of his problems as a flute-player (I still refuse to use the term "flautist")until he was an adult. Kids have a way of concealing their humiliations from their parents.
