I know SDL has patented techniques for fiber Bragg gratings, so maybe this is a factor, too. I just wish I understood the bits and pieces better.

Pat - I imagine the SDLI/JDSU contract was under discussion when KK was on his buying frenzy. There may be some significance or it might have just been the easiest way the deal with the issue with so much on JDSU's plate. The links I've included from the TMF Fiberhead board are really very general in nature rather than being JDSU-specific. While far from comprehensive, they have some very good info and links that help explain the "bits and pieces". - peggylynn
