<<Whatever they do, they will have to start spending in order to get big. Any comments?>>
Yes, they should stay focused on the customer and not spend the effort required to do due diligence. It is much easier to grow 50% at the $800 million level than at the $10B level. When you get to $10B you are forced to acquire to keep up. The $800M to $10B revenue range is the sweet spot and CIEN is well positioned to grow to $10B without any major M & A expense. Their customers love them and they are well accepted by the old line and the new line network buyers. Stay the course for now is my advice.

Rustam, With an $18 billion market cap, Ciena certainly has the wherewithall to make judicious acquisitions. But why?

The only acquisitions that make any sense are those that would be strategic in nature and most likely would involve expanding the product line, ie Omnia and Lightera, or taking out a competitive threat. Ciena currently is not threatened. And its growth from within is awesome, and accelerating to boot.

A merger with Juniper may make sense from a purely technical and marketing aspect as both companies have mutually compatible products, and they are currently involved in a marketing alliance. (Joint Supercomm demo next week, etc) I'm sure the topic has been discussed at length by both boards.

I agree with Daniel, that Ciena is in the sweet spot. Not too big, not too small, just right.

You all know that I am extremely bullish on the Optical Networking sector. You also have seen me state repeatedly that Ciena offers the best of breed technology, and that Ciena is the play of the decade.

Have you checked out ONIS market cap today? All things are relative.

PS: Regarding this vendor financing business. I don't like it one damn bit. It is a very poor business practice. There are other alternatives to gaining a contract win and financing the deal. Wall Street will figure it out. This is a high stakes game.
