Yes, that is tautologically so: if ideas are in conflict, they are in conflict. And, to be fair, there are times when antagonism is unavoidable, as when I argue with bigots. But, for the most part, the way in which I learned to carry on civilized discussion was not especially adversarial......

Ideas accost each other for supremacy. And we as the servants of those ideas accost each other with our ideas. Even I, not believing in anything strongly, know that when you see two competing ideas one will usually seem more logical than the other and thus "win". Or an idea will appeal to the belief centers and latch onto it's human host that way. If the ideas aren't competing this is not a problem- but two competing and mutually exclusive ideas are de facto in conflict.

Yes and no, X. One of the things that I enjoy about this thread is the opportunity at times to hear what other intelligent people think and believe and why they think what they do. Their opinions may or may not change mine, but the rationales often become a good deal clearer and I think that it is to my benefit to understand them.
