In the case of Netscape, perhaps I would have said "maimed" rather than "killed."

Because they are able to continue offering a free product, or because it now is positioned for broader distribution? Or is it that the $10,000,000,000(?) price tag was too low?

No maiming here Charles, except Govt. intervention. Capitalism warrants both winners and losers, Netscape hasn't lost, let alone been maimed. Yet.

I don't think Microsoft fits the role of battered housewife very well.

I never said it did. It was your analogy of comparison of "killing" likened to Microsoft's behavior. It's not comparable, despite what you may think. My post addressed the question directly as it was proposed.
