Re: Broadband Stats: Q1 HFC&DSL (Cox, Rogers, SBC)

Thread- And the HFC vs DSL battle continues...some more stats from a few major SPs for Q1 2000.

IMO, the DSL solution is pulling up faster than anticipated just a few months back. But when the MSOs roll out voice in mass, things could change quickly. Then when the telcos rollout TV(via VDSL) things could change again.

All nice scenarios for the equipment suppliers irregardless of who wins the broadband war. -MikeM(From Florida)

MSO Cable Modem Subs

Cox Communications--said it counted 259,770 cable modem customers at the end of Q1 2000.

MediaOne--served 278,000 at the end of Q1 2000.

Rogers Cablesystems--Canada's largest MSO, added 29,600 cable modem customers in the first quarter, raising its total to 215,200 at end of Q1.

These three MSOs alone now account for a total of 752,970 cable modem subscribers.

Telco DSL Subs

SBC Communications, America's largest local telephone company, announced it finished the first quarter with 201,000 DSL lines in service, a 75-percent increase since year-end 1999.

At the other end of the spectrum is Bell Atlantic. The RBOC said it finished Q1 with only 62,000 DSL lines in service and that the company will likely miss its year-end target of 500,000 lines by at least 20 percent.

Re: US Broadband Stats: HFC/Telephony from Adelphia

Thread- My uplinked post stated 200,000 subs today for cable telephony service. If I'm reading the stats out of Adelphia(sym:ADLAC) correctly, it's light. But I don't know much about Adelphia. Maybe it's twisted copper telephone customers?

I do know Antec(sym:ANTC), in their last CC, clearly said Adelphia was undecided about their cable telephony plans. I'll look it up....well although Adelphia is the fifth largest MSO in the country, apparently their telephony customers today are indeed, copper based. I'll leave this post for future reference.

BTW, Antec also mentioned in their last CC, in a round about way, they were planning on getting Adelphia's upgrade business. I don't know what this means to Antec plans, but looks like Harmonic(sym:HLIT) just picked up a large contract from Adelphia: biz.yahoo.com
