Okay, I'm here to say I'm fulla shit. Way behind the times.

When I was talking about the replacement of rails, that was recent. OTOH, how the spikes held the rails was from 30 years ago.

III took a drive and looked at a set of rails. They were held by a plate that was nailed to the ties. That plate had holes for 5 spikes on each side. Looked like they tried for 4 per side or 16 per tie. Some revelations-

Some of what looked like never spiked holes were where the spike had been sheared off, others just full of gravel some never used. Some spikes had equally overlapping all around the head, some just offset. Almost all of the spikes that were not next to the rail were 1" to 3" protruding. More-

I drove 5 miles down the same line and stopped on the tracks for a quick lookie. Made the people behind fill with glee, well they were honking. Anyway, this section had plates but only two holes per side or a total of 8 spikes per rail. Seemed like all the holes had spikes but had to move as the honking was getting to me. Tomorrow, if it's not too hot, I'll walk the 1 1/2 miles to another line and peek around. Oh and Gaugs, my spike is prettier than any of your spikes.
