I have no idea what Neocon is talking about- but I was talking about all ideas- including the majority of ideas, which I think normal folks carry around with them- and I do not believe are the province of ivory tower folk. Ideas including Christianity, Judaism, democracy, communism, socialism, simple mathematics even manners, behavior and language to name just a few of the biggies. An example of an idea that did not fair so well- would be the idea those folks had that left behind their "vehicles" and committed suicide to follow the comet. I doubt many people are going to perceive that as the kind of idea they must have in their heads.

The ideas we kick around here- for the most part- (like belief, for example) are ideas almost anyone can understand and carry.

That is somewhat true, although we are rarely in much of a position to accept or reject them, unless they are known to be controversial. Even when they are controversial, there are few laymen in a position to judge. Besides, whether you or I accept the notion of stare decesis, for example, matters little to the practice of law. In any event, I mainly want to emphasize three ideas: one, that the effectuality of most ideas does not depend upon their wide dissemination; two, that ideas that seemed moribund will sometimes revive, whether or not revised; and three, that institutional structures and the particularities of various disciplines cannot be ignored in tracing the fate of ideas........
