Why do I get the feeling that he yearns for the good
ole'days when good folks worked on the Plantations...for
free. No inflation in salaries there, right Mr. Greenspan?

Greenspan's job is to keep both inflation and unemployment low, as mandated by the Congress of the United States.

He is an economist and his education and past data tell him that you cannot decrease both arbitrarily at the same time. His economic models also tell him that allowing inflation to get out of hand will ruin the economy and increase unemployment. Hence he has to act. He is on the side of the little guy.
