Jay,

To the best of my recollection the difference between the Epson Stylus Color and Photo Stylus series has to do with the printing speed for textual documents. The Stylus Color is designed for office work, but has some value as a graphic arts device as well. I believe the distinction is not droplet size, but black & white print speed (faster in the Stylus Color series) and the ability to have droplets sit side-by-side in a tighter array (better in the Photo Stylus series). Also, the PhotoStylus cartridges use a 5 color (plus dedicated black) ink well. The Photo Stylus 870 has more light-fast ink.

Essentially it is a trade off between document speed and photo resolution.

I would go with the Photo Stylus series.
