Unfortunately, look for that issue to get completely dropped by the administration as soon as the Elian case drops below the news radar. A little bluster now in order to appease the "hypocrite" crowd. But that's about it.

After all, it's been seven years and they're finally giving it some attention. I don't have to wonder why.

Yup, spend millions of taxpayer dollars assisting a communist father get his son. But let's not spend a red-nickel helping an American dad retrieve his daughters from Germany for seven years. Seven years and we finally care!

Puhleeese.

And what about the children in Cuba being kept from their American parents? Do we care about them? Has a news story been written by the media on their plight? Or perhaps it was just a rumor I heard?

On another front, Clinton continued pressing today about the resolution of custody issues with Germany.

He'd better get a move on it, because once he's gone this issue could be dead. It looks like both our candidates prefer family courts, like the ones in Germany, to decide these matters "in the best interests of the child."

Vice President Gore, who was criticized within his own
party when he broke with the administration and said the
Elian matter should be decided in a family court, repeated
that position. "I have long felt, as I said early on, it should
have been referred to a family court and decided according
to due process, which is the normal venue where disputes
like that are resolved," Gore said. "However, now that it is
in the federal court this decision today must be accepted
with respect and we all wish the boy well."

Texas Gov. George W. Bush (R) said: "I continue to
believe that it is in the child's best interest for the decision
to be made in the family courts, a court whose job it is to
decide the best interest of the child."
