The mere fact of taxation is not robbery, and the funds that built the Smithsonian are mixed, a combination of philanthropy and subsidy. In any event, they are not similar to the pyramids. They exalt republican institutions, not pharaohs. Even the Washington Monument is devoid of pomposity, and it is fitting, I think, that he should be honored. In the final analysis, though, the capital of the nation, that represents its interests to the world, should be a place of dignity and beauty......
