MONEY : "Would anyone try to get a drug approved that didn't work??? Would anyone try to get a drug approved to help kids with Meningo. IF it showed no benefit?? What good is ANY drug IF it doesn't work???" A LOT OF MONEY!!!! The public (meaning physicians and the rest of the world once it is over the counter) will consume an ineffective drug and pay LOTS of money for it. Look at ICN pharma, the Yugoslavia guy try even to be president-minister something good intentions end up like a pawn clown with some dignity, He is a bilionaire now, and the foundation and money making is a drug proven not to work!! and FDA approved!!!!! of course. Ribavirin original purpose was to treat RSV infection in babies/children and it has been shown over and over that it does not work postmarketing, no way to get it out, many believe and pay in the $500 range for treatment(made the patients/insurance pay for it) that it does work, not very toxic for patients, but more for pregnant staff, anyway it has been a success for several years and it seems to be waning now, but strangely it seems to help in Hepatitis C with Interferon and that it is giving it new life, here is a little more credible since is a chronic infection (more time to see an effect, as opposed to RSV a very acute disease, could kill babies in few days, sometimes one day). Look at Refludan and Tamiflu, it takes away one day out of 5 sick days or something ridiculous like that, FDA approved it, few months after FDA is reminding physicians (what a shame) to use antibiotics in pneumonia (even if they think is just a flu/pneumonia) cause several deaths were reported due to conplacency in using Refludan/Tamiflu. Plus, the usual TV adds ban due to overt claims from the Pharmas. In the meantime? almost half a billion already spent, and next year both are going to break a billion$ yes with a B!! for pure garbage. For many years it was the mainstay of Amantadine (same garbage and flu) many years and many billion$ after still going, and g...not so a good seller anymore, but many physicians still believe in it!!! It does work in some cases of Parkinson's DATA NO
