We are certainly affected by people whose ideas we may not fully understand, but I would argue that there are more ideas in the great mass of unspecialized people, then in the intellectual elite. Now that doesn't mean the ideas in the masses are correct, or even positive (although it's very difficult to know whether ideas will be positive or negative except in retrospect)- I just happen to think by sheer numbers there are probably more ideas there.

Of course the viability of an idea is affected by what is already in our mind (and the context that shapes our mind is merely ideas- even if we are only marginally aware fo them I'd argue they are still ideas)- I said that- those would be other ideas in our mind- and any NEW idea would have to compete with what is already there. IF the idea doesn't fit with the ideas we already have, if the idea is too complex for us to understand, then we won't pick it up.

A note on the importance of education: Judaism is not an idea, it is a constellation of ideas and practices, very complex and demanding, if one is going to pursue tradition. Thus, after the rate of intermarriage, the biggest concern among religious American Jews is education. Ideally, one would know Hebrew, possibly Aramaic (for the Talmud), have learned most of the common ritual law, such as that governing prayers or food preparation, and been steeped in the lore and ritual of the group. Lack of education, and the difficulty of compensating in adulthood, makes even those who would like to lead more traditional Jewish lives attenuate their connection with Jewish tradition, make do in undemanding Reform Temples, and often raise children who have no real feeling for tradition at all..........
