They'd probably never let him out, the papal pardon not being much use anymore. Crazy fellow, no doubt about it, supreme genius, no doubt about that either. Sometimes I feel that we should scrap all subsidies for art, and all art education too. Do it the old-fashioned way. If you want to be an artist, you have to find someone willing to accept you as an apprentice, and earn your keep. After your apprenticeship, you sell your work or starve. I have a feeling that we'd have a lot fewer artists, and much better art.
