OTOH, I admit that extensive footnotes made reading Ulysses a far more meaningful experience than diving into it unassisted the first time. So there is some value in having an interpreter at times.

It is always preferable that people see for themselves, and one often makes a personal connection to a piece, of course. But I do not believe that true art is a window on the essence of the artist, nor a mirror for the viewers. I certainly don't believe that

"Revealing more about the viewer" is one of the highest purposes art can attain.

except as it might offer insight into the human condition.

Art has various uses: to exalt a subject, to commemorate, to please, to challenge, to decorate.....and the success of a particular work does not have to do primarily with its intent, but with difficult to ponder things like the play of colors or the elaboration of form. Sometimes content matters, but mainly insofar as we care to judge the appropriateness of treatment........
