My read on the Macro picture has to do with MSFT leaving US for Canada, helping thier dollar & hurting ours, requiring less gold selling pressure from their government.

Perhaps it is also related to Soros firing his fund president today. It was rumored a bit back Soros was going long gold. The guy with BT in his recent history possibly brought a downward pressure with him from BT.
