Amkor to Assemble Multi-Media Cards for SanDisk Monday June 5, 6:05 am Eastern Time Company Press Release CHANDLER, Ariz.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--June 5, 2000--SanDisk Corporation's (Nasdaq: SNDK - news) multi-media card (MMC), which places more flash memory into a smaller, easier to use package, owes its growing consumer demand to SanDisk's own pioneering semiconductor technology and the advanced module packaging techniques developed by Amkor Technology, Inc. (Nasdaq: AMKR - news). The postage stamp-sized multi-media card, which is assembled by Amkor, is slightly thicker than a credit card and half the area of competing cards. It provides re-writable memory for many of today's portable multi-media devices, including internet music players, digital camcorders and still cameras, cellular telephones, personal digital assistants (PDAs), and other new devices currently growing in popularity worldwide. A single 32-megabyte memory card holds the equivalent of a full compact disk of music, 480 minutes of voice-only audio or 24,000 pages of double spaced text. Higher-capacity Amkor-assembled memory cards of the same size and format are expected to be available later this year. More than 80 companies worldwide currently produce products that rely on multi-media cards for their solid-state storage. ``The joint effort by Amkor and SanDisk to increase manufacturing capacity within a short window is one example of Amkor's expanding efforts in System in Package module manufacturing,'' said Patrick McKinney, senior vice president of business development and marketing for Amkor's modules group. ``We are leveraging Amkor's semiconductor package assembly capability with surface mount technology and a supply management program to benefit the marketplace.'' Amkor's modules group assembles the cards in 16- and 32-megabyte capacities using SanDisk-developed IC die, components and substrates. By mid-summer, Amkor will begin providing components and substrates for SanDisk through a turnkey supply chain management program. Amkor is increasing its assembly and test capacity for flash storage cards to achieve higher storage densities, including the use of stacked die, to meet growing market requirements from SanDisk and other customers. ``We look forward to rapid market acceptance of the MMC form factor and being able to meet SanDisk's increasing volume requirements as the multi-media card demand grows,'' McKinney said.
