Sony Selling PlayStation Chips
By ERIC PRIDEAUX, Associated Press Writer

TOKYO (AP) - Sony Computer Entertainment Inc. says it will sell the computer chips that power its newest game system to competitors in hopes of increasing its market share.

The move is seen as an effort to compete with Japanese electronics maker Nintendo Co. and U.S. software company Microsoft Corp. (NasdaqNM:MSFT - news), both of which are vying for dominance in the lucrative computer game market.

In a statement Thursday, the subsidiary of electronics giant Sony Corp. (NYSE:SNE - news) said its decision was prompted by the success of its PlayStation 2 electronic game, which has reportedly sold more than 2 million units since its March 4 launch in Japan.

There has been no decision on which companies would buy the right to use the so-called large-scale integrated circuit chips, the core technology behind the PlayStation 2's high-speed graphics.

The chips will likely go on sale in early 2001, Sony spokesman Masanobu Sakaguchi said Friday.

Sony Computer Entertainment also said it would invest $1.15 billion to build a new semiconductor factory and expand another existing facility. It recently invested $1.2 billion in semiconductor production.

PlayStation 2 is scheduled to be released Oct. 26 in North America and Europe.

The game system is expected to face tough competition next year from Japanese company Nintendo Co.'s new machine, the Dolphin, and U.S. software giant Microsoft Corp.'s first game console, the X-Box.
