The problem is that it is almost the only place in the country with a reasonable network of cities and towns. There is plenty of farmland, and there are parks and forests protected by the federal government, but one can get from Washington to Baltimore in an hour, Baltimore to Wilmington in an hour, Wilmington to downtown Philly in about an hour and a half. I am 5 hours from downtown Manhattan, by car, without a stop. I am a couple of miles from the Bay: it is slightly over two hours to the ocean, and about 2 and a half hours to the Blue Ridge Mountains. Most of the countryside, in either direction, makes an attractive drive, and there are plenty of amenities along the way, if one needs gas, food, or lodging for some reason. It is a humanized landscape.............
