Red Hat is a popular server Linux. IMO, Caldera is another one to look at. The best Linux though probably isn't Linux at all, but FreeBSD. That's what Yahoo runs. It's more robust (and secure by default). --- There are lots of other factors though, like what you're going to be doing with the server besides Apache, Bind and Sendmail. -JCJ

The Linux kernel itself is not the best choice if you are looking for Linux/GNU/Open Source technology. FreeBSD is the preferred choice amongst internet providers, because it scales better if you need 1000 or more IP addresses on a single server (hashing), and is more secure.

This is what makes Linux dangerous: Every single part of a Linux distribution can or will be exchangable with a commercial product with different properties. For webhotel providers, the kernel itself is replaced. All other software still runs.

Pair Networks has a very good performance and very professional management of webhotels, I use them myself: pair.com. With approx. 100.000 sites they are one of the biggest.
