re. The Crab

A couple of side notes wrt the Crab. Last summer while in Chaco Canyon at the insistence of my better half (actually I didn't take much convincing), we hiked to the supernova pictograph. It's a little faded (after all it's been there the better part of a millennium), but well worth seeing.

The other note is more historical in nature. While the Chinese, Koreans, even the Anasazi noted the "new" star that was so bright as to be visible during the day, the Europeans were strangely silent. Some at best "maybe" obscure references to such a spectacular event. I was always puzzled by this until I finally saw an explanation. In 1054 in Europe, religion was paramount. Finally after centuries of ill will the pope excommunicated the Greek archbishop (head of the orthodox church) in 1054. And then this "sign" appears in the sky. Bad juju. And nobody talks about it.

Hanging around...
