Brister, >>but don't forget that we the smart consumers of America are responsible for low inflation because we refuse to pay too much for goods and services.

You must not have been alive during the 70's. We were paying for goods that were inflating at a rapid pace. We did not have a choice. Gas went from .19 cents per gallon in 1962 to over a $1.00 in the late 70's. Hamburger went from .20 cents per pound to over a $ per pound. People were hoarding goods that were increasing in price from one trip to the store to the next. Inflation which was running 12%; and at one time and I can remember buying bonds which were sending me 21% in interest payments.

It is my observation that the generation that did not live through the last inflation period in the US is not paying attention to the increase in their costs. Some of the increases that are obvious to me are: insurance of all kinds (equal coverage), food, energy, durable goods, etc. I believe this generation will wake up one morning and wonder why they are having problems paying off their credit cards, car payments and house payments..to find out their discretionary income is 0 and cash flow is negative. The problem is it will be to late.

When I was working during this period of time I was getting 15% to 20% increases in my salary each year. When I got a promotion a 30% increase in income was the norm. The working people today are not getting this increase in compensation to cover the current increase in costs. The people on fixed incomes are getting killed right now because Washington has played with the numbers that generate pension and social security increases; and if the fed does not curb inflation the working folks are going to have to start picking up the tab for these people to maintain minimum survival costs or let them starve.
