hdl, hm was around after the 1929 crashola, i don't know of any other current gold companies that have been around that long, thus the use of hm to analyze how gold stocks might do after a crash.

and as far as why hm currently ? well, personally i think a basket of big caps and a few smaller plays are prudent, but hm is a worthwhile pick within that basket.

your comment about how 'hm doesn't make much and isn't expected to' is rather vague don't you think ?

HM's seem to have hit upon a motherlode in Argentina...the deposit is much bigger than was originally estimated. it has a few choice assets besides that, which makes it a good takeover target. and 25% of its shares are held by the German Baron von Finck, who's in it for the long term from what i hear...that has removed these shares from the trading float.
